Journalling Is a Powerful Tool for Processing Thoughts and Emotions
Journalling is a powerful tool for processing your thoughts and emotions. It can be as simple as writing about events that happened and what you think, or anything that you want to think about. It can be deep emotional work, where you write about emotionally charged experiences: what is bothering you, how or why it affects you, and what you want. What are your emotions, feelings, and motivations? Jealousy, envy, anger? Why are you thinking that way? Is your thinking justified? If old memories still upset you, write them down carefully and completely. Your mind does the processing on its own.
Some tips for journaling:
Write for 15-30 minute sessions
Try to write continuously and don't focus on any mistakes
Aim to do 4 sessions over 4 consecutive days (or once a week for 4 consecutive weeks) on the same topic
Include facts that happened as well as how you felt then and now
Include associations from the past with the present
Review writing sessions 1 week later and notice the frequency of negative and positive words across sessions
